Priya: Neurogenesis Research and EMT Training

This summer, I'm doing a couple of pretty fun things! For my PURM project, I'm working in the Eisch Lab at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. Our lab studies the dentate gyrus, one of the two areas of the brain in which neurogenesis continues into adulthood. My research specifically focuses on how neurogenesis is altered (I.e., does it increase or decrease) after mild traumatic brain injury. I've learned super interesting techniques in immunohistochemistry, and I'm really excited to continue my research into the effect of neurogenesis and its relationship with injury. I'll be presenting my research at a PURM poster session in September!

In addition to my research, I've been taking an EMT certification class, from which I've learned a TON about emergency medicine. There's only so much an EMT can do, but emergency medical services are the first link in improving people's chances of survival after an emergency, so it's pretty awesome to learn those vital skills. Lastly, I've been volunteering in the Buerger Welcome Center at CHOP, helping to escort patients and welcome families. In my free time, I've been hanging out with friends in Philly and going on vacation with my family!
